The Cobb at Lyme Regis, one of Britain’s oldest artificial harbours.

Now a resort, the Pearl of Dorset, with a promenade and the Cobb Arms, it has Georgian architecture, the 16th century St Michael the Archangel’s church and a town crier. It was a watering hole which attracted Jane Austen, who had a seafront cottage, and set Louisa Musgrove’s fallhere in Persuasion, which was filmed here. Local resident John Fowles set The French Lieutenant’s Woman here and the 1980 film with Meryl Streep waiting on the end of the Cobb is the image of the village which has become famous. Martha Grimes’ The Lamorna Wink claims there had been serial child killings here.
